Margo’s Got Money Troubles Review: Is the New Apple TV+ Series Worth Watching?

A smart take on modern motherhood.

Apple TV+’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles stars Elle Fanning as a young mother who turns to OnlyFans to support her child. The dramedy, based on Rufi Thorpe’s bestselling novel, has quickly become one of the streamer’s most talked-about new releases.

If you were a young mother without a college degree and with bills to pay, what would you do to support your child? Better yet, what wouldn’t you do? In Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Elle Fanning plays the titular character who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant.

Determined to have the baby, even if she has to sacrifice her education in the process, Margo finds a way to make it work. Her solution: OnlyFans. The subscription-based online platform is driven by creators looking to further their income. In Margo’s case, OnlyFans becomes her most viable option to pay the bills and still be 100 per cent focused on her baby.

The Apple TV+ series created by Big Little Lies showrunner David E. Kelley is based on a bestseller of the same name. It garnered a nearly perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes upon its release, and audiences have been particularly invested in Margo’s unique motherhood journey. Is Margo’s Got Money Troubles worth watching? We certainly think so. Here is everything you need to know before hitting play.

What Is Margo’s Got Money Troubles About?

Margo’s Got Money Troubles follows the protagonist as she finds out she’s pregnant with her college professor’s baby. With him (Michael Angarano) demonstrating no interest in the child, Margo must fend for herself just as her mother did on her behalf. After all, Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer) worked for years as a Hooters waitress to provide for her daughter.

Despite her mother’s efforts to set her up for success, Margo makes the same mistakes. Relying on her once-absent father (Nick Offerman) to raise her newborn, Margo resorts to OnlyFans for financial support. The Apple TV+ series focuses on Margo’s unusual approach to paying for nappies and mounting bills.

After displaying her comedic chops in The Great, Elle Fanning returns to TV with a heartfelt dramedy about motherhood and a dysfunctional family.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles Trailer Explained

Apple TV+ unveiled the series’ trailer on March 9, 2026. Before the trailer begins, there’s a short preview of Margo lying in bed, while her OnlyFans fan count and pay-per-view start to rise. This hints at what’s in store for Margo as she joins the social media platform known for its adult content. From breastfeeding to posting suggestive clips online, the character almost lives a double life. And most importantly, she doesn’t feel ashamed by it. As Margo says to her baby in the trailer, “we are on the precipice of greatness.”

The official teaser also shows how Mark preys on Margo, who is a student in his English class. He even tells her that, with her writing abilities, she might as well be at Harvard. However, he is only complimenting her because he is attracted to Margo. When she gives in to his advances, it doesn’t take long for the pregnancy test to come back positive.

When Shyanne finds out about the pregnancy, she is disappointed in her daughter. Yet, she assures her that everything will be fine, considering that she has firsthand experience in solo parenting. When Margo sets up her OnlyFans account, her parents aren’t keen on the idea. Yet, as Margo’s content is met with profitable returns, the protagonist doesn’t want to back out.

As a result, Mark comes back into the picture, igniting a custody battle. He argues that Margo’s OnlyFans presence makes her an unfit mother to raise their child. His senseless accusations put Margo on a tightrope. After all, she only joined OnlyFans because he forced her to drop out of college and agreed to set up a fund for the baby in exchange for her silence.

Still, as Nicole Kidman’s character says, she does not need to apologise to do what she can to be a good mother. The Apple TV+ original provides a light-hearted tale about the lengths a mother will go to ensure her child is taken care of and balances sharp humour with timely commentary on motherhood, online labour and financial survival.

Elle Fanning plays Margo, the young mother who uses OnlyFans as both a creative outlet and as her main source of income. The actress even told ELLE that the series’ creative team made an account on the platform for research purposes. “We got to understand the spectrum of people’s interests. From extreme to extremely tame,” she says. “Like one girl I saw, she just cooks in a little sexy outfit.” Fanning recently received her first Oscar nomination for Sentimental Value and could likely get another Emmy nod for her latest TV role.

After playing a mother overcoming grief in The Madison, Michelle Pfeiffer has a much more feel-good arc in this series. Shyanne is a beauty-obsessed single mother, looking for the opportunity to find happiness later in life. Her complicated past with Margo’s father prevented her from settling down with a man who could give her the stability and love she craves. She finally finds that through her relationship with Kenny, played by Greg Kinner.

Nick Offerman is a stellar addition to the cast as Margo’s father, Jinx. An ex-wrestler who is determined to leave his struggle with addiction behind, Jinx is ready for a fresh start. Moving in with Margo allows him to get to know his daughter further and be present in his grandson’s life.

Supporting cast members to note are Michael Angarano as Margo’s former professor, Mark, Nicole Kidman as Margo’s eccentric lawyer, Lace, and Thaddea Graham as Margo’s cosplay-loving best friend, Susie.

When it comes to young mothers on TV, there is a plethora of examples to consider. From Margaret Qualley in Maid to Shailene Woodley in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, the list goes on. Margo’s Got Money Troubles brings a digital perspective to women’s issues. The series displays the hardships of raising a child without relevant work experience in today’s economy and taps into modern anxieties surrounding digital labour, creator culture and the blurred line between empowerment and exploitation. Content creation has turned into a lucrative business, and OnlyFans has become Margo’s way of fulfilling her storytelling urge while getting the big bucks.

The Women’s Journal had the chance to watch all eight episodes of the Apple TV + dramedy for review, and it’s certainly worthwhile. What sets it apart is its focus on representing Margo as a dedicated mother who also creates adult content. She is present and nurturing, while also giving her baby everything that he needs.

The series focuses on the dysfunctional family dynamics between Margo, Shyanne, and Jinx. Each of them is imperfect in their own way, and that’s surprisingly why they are the perfect family to root for. Jinx is tough-looking but has an affectionate father and grandfather. Shyanne might be beauty-obsessed and a little out there when it comes to fashion, but she is a fiercely protective mother. Margo’s baby is embraced by a family unit unlike others we’ve seen on screen before, and it’s refreshing to see.

Elle Fanning Delivers a Standout Performance in ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’

Fanning’s portrayal of Margo delivers one of the strongest performances of her career, anchoring the series with emotional vulnerability and biting comedic timing. There is no denying that the series has award potential written all over it. The Apple TV + production also functions as a fitting follow-up to Dakota Fanning’s bingeable series All Her Fault, which follows a distressed mother trying to find her missing child.

The Fanning sisters are furthering their success through their production company, Lewellen Pictures. Margo’s Got Money Troubles shows their desire to tell stories that connect with a modern audience and that spotlight women’s lived experiences. Up next on their exciting production roster is The Nightingale, based on Kristin Hannah’s BookTok hit. The film will mark the siblings’ first time sharing the screen at the same time. Elle Fanning played the younger version of Dakota Fanning’s character in I Am Sam, but that’s the extent of their working partnership in front of the camera. Yet, we will only get to see her act opposite her younger sister in the near future.

Will Margo’s Got Money Troubles Get a Season 2?

Given that Margo’s Got Money Troubles is based on a book by Rufi Thorpe, it was made as a limited series. The cast and series creator haven’t mentioned furthering the story during their interviews promoting the adaptation. Yet, we’ve seen several examples of series that were based on a single novel and still got renewed. Although hope is the last one that dies, everything indicates that there won’t be a follow-up season. Rest assured, Margo’s journey does feel complete by the finale.
