Understanding Common Safety Concerns for Women Living Alone

Women living alone may experience a range of safety concerns that can vary depending on their location and circumstances. Some common concerns include home invasions, break-ins, harassment, and assault. It’s essential to be aware of these risks and take proactive steps to mitigate them.

In today’s digital age, it’s crucial to protect your personal information and be cautious about sharing your location or daily routines on social media. By being mindful of your online presence, you can reduce the risk of being targeted by criminals.

Home Security Measures for Women Living Alone

Securing your home is a vital step in ensuring your safety as a woman living alone. Here are some practical tips to enhance the security of your home:

  • Install high-quality locks on all doors and windows. Consider adding deadbolts for added security.
  • Invest in a reliable home security system that includes alarms, motion sensors, and surveillance cameras.
  • Keep your home well-lit, both inside and outside. Install outdoor motion sensor lights to deter potential intruders.
  • Avoid advertising that you live alone. Use your last name and initials on mailboxes and directories instead of your full name.

We spoke to home safety advisors at Toucan about the most common security risks that people living alone face as well as their top ten security tips for women living alone.

“The most common home security vulnerability is scammers impersonating officials and tradespeople (for example gas engineers),” they say. “Which is why it’s crucial to always ask for ID and be aware of existing scams in the area before opening the door.”

“Another common mistake is homeowners leaving house keys or car keys close to the front door which makes it easy for intruders to put something through the letter box and retrieve them.”

“Intruders are less likely to target your home if it is well lit as they can easily be seen by neighbours or passers by. Keeping trees and bushes cut back ensures that there’s is nowhere to hide and no branches to climb on to access your property.

“Our Toucan Security Light Camera is an excellent multi-purpose device as not only does it have the security camera, it also has a super bright LED light that can be set to activate when motions is detected or by permanently on at night.”

Toucan’s top ten security tips for women living alone:
